Still Suffering From Acne At Age 40? Read This.

We have all heard of puberty acne, sure. For those of us who have been there and survived that, yay to that! But the battle might continue for some of us - have you learned of or experienced the 'midlife acne'?

Yes, it is, indeed true that acne is something that can follow us to adulthood. So clingy, right?! Even for people who have not experienced puberty acne, there is a possibility of acne popping out once you reach your 30's or 40's, which can be confusing when it happens.

No Worries, You Are Not Alone!

Recent research has shown an increasing prevalence in Adult Female Acne (AFA) cases, with persisting acne seen among 41% of women between 25 and 44, and over half of them reported scarring.

Puberty acne is most likely due to hormonal changes, while 'midlife acne' is thought to arise from a combination of factors, such as changes in skin structure, diet, stress, and hormonal fluctuations.
Acne in women above 40 usually appears as pink or red inflammatory bumps along the cheek, jawline, mouth, and chin. Sometimes, whiteheads and blackheads that developed from clogged pores can eventually lead to painful, pus-filled acne known as pustules.

As we age, our skin cell’s turnover rate decreases - renewing itself once a month and by 50, it slows down even more to between 45 and 90 days - leaving a layer of dead cells on the skin's surface. Additionally, the pores become larger as the Collagen layer stretches out, leading to more clogged pores and subsequent acne.

Other than that, diet can also play a significant role in deciding the fate of our acne's severity and healing progress. The 'western diet' particularly, may accelerate acne in our 40's. This type of diet includes food high in either sugar, saturated or trans fat, which triggers the body to release the hormone insulin. Having excess insulin can stimulate the oil glands to produce more oil and increase the risk of acne breakouts.

While this can happen at any age, the risk of insulin resistance increases as we age, making adults over 40 more susceptible to acne breakouts due to insulin imbalances. A great tip to prevent a spike in insulin is by reducing the intake of high-glycemic food, such as pasta, white rice, bread, or sugary food. Instead, add more fruits, whole grains, and unprocessed vegetables in your diet. Foods that are high in antioxidants, Vitamin A, and Vitamin E, are also beneficial for the skin as they help reduce inflammation.

Let’s Not Forget About The Stress We May Be Facing Day After Day.

Being under constant stress increases the stress hormone, cortisol, and the hormone called androgens. Together, these hormones activate the sebaceous glands to stimulate excess oil production, which can worsen acne and cause what we know as flare-ups.

The stress hormone cortisol also increases blood sugar, inflammation, and blood pressure. This can indirectly impact nutrient absorption and slow down the skin renewal process, leading to unhealed acne and scarring.

Besides that, hyperandrogenism - a condition where there are too many androgens- is a major factor contributing to late-onset acne in women who did not experience acne during puberty.

It may not seem like it, but managing our stress can make a huge difference in our skin condition! Start by getting adequate sleep as a lack of rest may kick-start that cortisol surge. Besides that, resting also gives your acne a chance to heal itself. If you are a late sleeper, here’s an idea: start cultivating the good habit of setting a curfew reminder on your phone to go to bed. Aside from reducing stress and acne breakout, you can say bye-bye to dark circles too!

Also, don't forget to get in some form of physical exercise to pump up your endorphins, also known as your brain's feel-good neurotransmitters. So, dust out your gym outfit and time to boost up some happy hormones now!

Finally, Here Comes Menopause A.K.A Puberty’s Vicious, Older Sister!

Women tend to begin menopause at some point during their 40's, and this causes hormonal fluctuations that are unavoidable. When we are younger, we tend to have a high level of estrogen, which helps protect our skin against acne. But during menopause, the hormone progesterone can go higher than estrogen, causing hormonal imbalances and cystic adult acne (Ouch!). This happens when the sebaceous gland produces thicker sebum, which changes the skin's pH level allowing bacteria to proliferate.

Other than that, women who suffer from Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) are also more prone to developing acne. This is mainly because they tend to have higher testosterone levels, leading to coarser hair growth whereby the follicles are likely to get blocked by sebum production.

So What To Do About It?

Living with acne can be stressful and harmful to our self-esteem. Even piling on make-up may not help to conceal it anymore. Even worse, it can aggravate the acne, causing future breakouts and scarring. Especially at this age, we are probably wondering, when can we finally be free of acne? We get it, and here is what we recommend! Let’s welcome the acne fighter, with 11 years of proven result and solidated by millions of people worldwide who have experienced its power.
