Vaginal Discharge Color: To Worry Or Not To Worry

Have you ever had that moment where you notice a difference in the color of your discharge than usual, and panicked? Ladies, we’ve all been there. While vaginal discharge is common, the color of vaginal discharge can tell you something about your health.

Vaginal discharge is the fluid released by the glands in the vagina and cervix. This fluid or discharge carries bacteria and dead cells to be flushed out of the body, keeping the vagina clean and protected from infection.

So, is vaginal discharge a good thing? Well, it depends! Sometimes, an imbalance of bacteria or pH levels in the vagina can cause a change in your discharge, and that may be accompanied by other symptoms such as itchiness, irritation, or a burning sensation.

Let’s explore the range of vaginal discharge and what they could mean.

#1 Clear, Milky, or Creamy

What it means: You’re all good! It is your natural vaginal lubrication and is generally harmless as it keeps your vagina tissues healthy by reducing friction. However, if you notice some discomfort, such as an unpleasant, fishy odor, itching, burning sensation, or pain while urinating, it can be a sign of yeast infection. Fret not as it is common among women and can be treated with over-the-counter medication. Or better yet, go for a natural feminine supplement that can treat this condition with no side effects.

#2 Yellow-To-Dark Green

What it means: You’re in the clear if this is a one-off occurrence or have recently consumed a new vitamin or food. But, if you notice having discharge in this color consistently, especially on the darker spectrum, and accompanied by chunky textures - it could very well be a sign of vagina yeast infection or a sexually transmitted infection (STI) called Trichomoniasis.

Yeast infections are caused by the overgrowth of the fungus Candida. Although a small amount of yeast may be present in the vagina, yeast infections can occur when there is too much yeast growth. What can be done to prevent or help treat a yeast infection? Studies have shown that consuming probiotics from food or supplements will slow the growth of yeast in the vagina, thus lowering the risk for infections. It can even help to treat and reclaim a healthy balance of bacteria in the vagina.

Trichomoniasis is caused by an organism called Trichomonas Vaginalis and it is spread through genital contact during sex. Hence, the only way to truly prevent it is by practicing safe sex and avoid multiple sexual partners.

#3 Blushed Pink-To-Red

What it means: Your discharge may range from light to deep pink to red, and this type of discharge is generally harmless in a small amount. It is often due to light bleeding, and even though that may sound scarier than it is, do not panic just yet! It may be an indication of the beginning or end of your menstruation. Some women may also experience it after intercourse, when there is a small injury or tear on the vaginal wall, and natural healing will usually occur.

So when should you be paying more attention? It could be a sign of a more serious health problem, if in a more significant amount or if you are experiencing vaginal or tummy pain. Potential causes may include sexually transmitted infection (STI), ectopic pregnancy, perimenopause, or, in rare cases, a sign of cervical cancer. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, we advise you to seek professional help - after all, it’s better to be safe than sorry!

#4 Cloudy Grey-To-Dark Grey

What it means: Cloudy or grey discharge is often accompanied by simultaneously-occurring symptoms - fishy odour, itching, and swelling around the vulva area. The unusual color is due to a collection of imbalanced bacteria, white blood cells, and cellular waste products. If this type of discharge occurs, it is probably a sign of infection: bacterial vaginosis (BV). While it is a common condition among women and can be treated with over-the-counter ointments, do remember, try to avoid taking oral antibiotics as an intervention. Antibiotics can easily disrupt the balance of bacteria in the vagina, as it kills the good bacteria needed to balance out the yeast-bacteria ratio. This ultimately may lead to yeast infection.

Instead, proper vaginal hygiene is essential, and the intake of probiotics and prebiotics can help prevent this all together!

Besides bacterial vaginosis, this type of discharge may also be a sign of more severe health issues related to sexually transmitted infections (STI), such as Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, or Trichomoniasis. Fret not, as there are ways to prevent these conditions altogether!
