4 Easy Tips To Improve Work Productivity While Working From Home

Feeling sluggish and unproductive while working from home? Here are some useful tips to help spur up that work productivity.

Working from home has become the new normal for many of us since the unprecedented Covid-19 pandemic took place. This saves us so much more time from not having to commute to and fro from work, gives us the luxury to sleep in longer, and wear our PJs at work which also means less laundry to wash. Yay!

Though there are many upsides to this situation, truth be told, working from home can be pretty tough. This is especially so for those who have to deal with crying young kids and pets who constantly bark even when there is an ongoing skype meeting. Not to forget, distractions are on full display at home. The TV and bed call out to us every time we pick up our laptops to do our work. With the freedom we get from working from home, it’s hard to pull ourselves away from getting distracted.

So how can you overcome these hurdles and be more productive at work?

#1 Create A Workspace That Fosters Healthy Working Habits

Having a dedicated space for you to work that is far away from distractions would help you maintain your focus and motivation when you are working. Even if you live in a small space without a proper work desk, you can also make use of your dining table or a makeshift platform to do your work. Make sure the space is not cluttered and is decorated with elements that would make you most productive - find a well-lit space that is equipped with power plugs and stationaries, use a comfortable chair so you don’t sprain your neck or back from sitting for long hours at your desk. You could also add a scented candle with an aroma that helps keep you focused throughout your work time.

Adding scent to your workspace illuminates your space and would help spruce up your mood and productivity. According to many studies, aroma has been known to play a significant role in attributing to cognitive functions (Ayu, 2016). Eucalyptus is one of the scents that help prevent lethargy, and increases focus and alertness. It reaps you all the benefits of caffeine without having any side effects.

Ignite Your Drive To Work

The Eucalyptus Candle by ORIQUE is no ordinary candle. As the name suggests, this candle is infused with Eucalyptus which contains antibacterial and antiviral properties that effectively kill 22 types of harmful bacteria. The candle is also made with 100% natural soy and beeswax which has air-purifying properties and can also be used as a moisturizer for your skin. Yes, you read it right, it’s a moisturizer too! It is suitable for all skin types and helps alleviate conditions like dry skin, stretch marks, acne, and even eczema-prone skin.

#2 Set A Reasonable Work Schedule With Breaks In Between

With a proper workspace set up, it’s now time to hustle. Start paying close attention to your energy and focus levels throughout the day to determine when you are the most attentive and alert. Once you have figured that out, prepare a work schedule that works well for you. If you’re an early bird, start your work day early with work hours from as early as 7am to increase productivity. It’s also vital to have a few break intervals to refuel and recalibrate once in a while so you would be able to work more effectively.

Give yourself a short break every 30-minutes to rest your eyes by looking away from the screen. You could also set a reminder every few minutes to stand up and do some mini stretches to keep your blood flowing and avoid sluggishness.

#3 Establish Ground Rules And Discuss Them With Your Family Members Or Housemates

If you live with a large family at home or share your home with a few housemates, it is important to set some rules so you can avoid facing situations like having your kids barging into your workspace during a video conference or having your housemate play loud music while you are working.

Request your family members or housemates to join you for a small chat to discuss with them the hours you will be working and mention that you should not be bothered during those hours. If you have young kids or pets to care for, discuss with your partner or your elders about how they can take over the responsibility of minding the kids or pets while you are working. You could also move to a quiet room or space to have your online conference or take work calls.

#4 Practice Healthy Eating Habits

Working at home tends to lead to more frequent visits to the kitchen and you may be tempted to indulge in junk food many times a day. Overeating may lead to sluggishness and would cause adverse effects on your health. Hence, plan your meals throughout the day, fill your kitchen with healthy foods, and drink plenty of water.

A good diet with proper nutrition would not only help you stay productive but also keep your immune system in good shape which is key at such a dire time. Try to avoid grabbing food from the frozen or canned food aisle as most of the food in these sections are processed foods with high amounts of sugar and unhealthy fat in them. Instead, opt to shop for real foods with no preservatives added, sugarless drinks, fresh fruits, and vegetables.
